Our first day was great – great for two reasons. The first one is that I got a much clearer sense of what and where and who Albert Drive is – how long and wide it is, how many people live on it, how it changes as you move along it, understanding north, south, east and west and importantly who lives and works where. My previous experience of the Drive was through Tramway. I came to see exhibitions and performances but had never walked further than the stretch between the railway station and the Tramway, so day one was really about orientation. The second great thing was getting to meet the extended ALBERT DRIVE Project team. I went into the Albert Drive Studios at 9.30 on Saturday morning not knowing anyone else on the team and came away at 7 in the evening with a whole bunch of new friends. It’s rare to be involved in a project where you don’t know at least one other person, but that wasn’t the case with Albert Drive and that’s exciting. I’m going to have the opportunity to learn about new practices, approaches, and ideas for making art through the other artists on the team and I really value and look forward to this.
